Preamble
Uzbek Student and Scholar Association (UzSSA) aims to promote greater awareness and deeper understanding of Uzbekistan to the IU students, faculty, staff, and the Bloomington community.
UzSSA welcomes diversity and cooperation with other student organizations.
Article I: Name of the Organization
Uzbek Student and Scholar Association (UzSSA). UzSSA is not a political organization and does not participate in political activities. Political views of the individual members do not necessarily represent a collective stand for UzSSA.
Article II: University Compliance
This organization shall comply with all Indiana University regulations, and local, state and federal laws.
Article III: Membership
Open to all people who have an interest in Uzbek language and culture. No fees are required, however, donations are accepted.
Article IV: Statement of Non-Discrimination
Participation in the proposed organization must be without regard to arbitrary consideration of such characteristics as age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, marital status, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status. [Section I.D.3(c).]
Article V: Advisor
The Faculty Advisor will be determined by the Executive Committee.
The Faculty Advisor will work to improve the effectiveness of UzSSA and assist members in reaching organizational goals.
Article VI: Executive Officers
President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Treasurer, and Webmaster.
Additional positions may be created subject to the Executive Committee's discretion.
UzSSA board members are responsible for their designated duties, and their given authorities. The authority is given for the purpose of managing this official committee and public activities, and should never be used for personal reasons.
PRESIDENT: The president shall preside over all meetings of the association, ensure smooth and efficient functioning of the association, and ensure the association's effective representation at all international moots and functions.
VICE PRESIDENT: If appointed, the Vice President shall help the president in carrying out his or her duties effectively, and shall be the acting President in the President's absence.
WEBMASTER: The Webmaster shall be responsible for updating and maintaining the UzSSA website. He or she must ensure the up to date and adequate coverage and representation of UzSSA events on the website. Content is to be gathered by the Webmaster from officers of the Executive Board through help of Associate Team members.
GENERAL SECRETARY: The General Secretary shall call the meetings of the association, and keep a written record of the minutes of the meetings, and carry out any other delegated duties.
TREASURER: The treasurer shall keep an accurate record of the assets of the association. In addition to being responsible for applying for new funds, the treasurer will also be required to present a financial report at least once each semester or more than once if requested by the President.
Article VII: Elections
Any interested candidate shall be elected by a simple majority of executives at a general meeting.
The voting process shall be conducted by the president and can proceed either by a show of hands or a secret ballot, as considered appropriate by the executive committee and the members present at the election meeting.
Any executive wishing to cast his or her vote shall be present at the meeting to do so. There shall be no absentee voting.
Article VIII: Non-Hazing
Hazing is strictly prohibited. Hazing shall be defined as any conduct which subjects another person, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or psychologically, to anything that may endanger abuse, degrade, or intimidate the person as a condition of association with a group or organization, regardless of the person's consent or lack of consent.
Article IX: Dues and Funds
Funds for any university wide event being sponsored and organized by the association can be requested from the finance board.
Article X: Personal Gain Clause
This organization shall ethically raise and distribute profits from organizational functions to either the organization or to members who provide a service that directly benefits the organization. Individual members may not receive compensation from for-profit ventures or partnerships if acting as a representative of a student organization.
Article XI: Meetings
First Friday of Fall and Spring Semesters.
Procedures for calling special meetings or canceling meetings: via e-mail or phone call
Article XII: Amendment
Amendment requires previous notification, also an eighty percent of affirmative vote of those present and voting, or of those present for its adoption.
Article XIII: By-Laws
1. All UzSSA board members have the right to resign from UzSSA or step down from their current position. UzSSA board members have the right to expel a UzSSA board member under the circumstance in which he/she fails to fulfill his/her duty. All board members must be in agreement of the expulsion.
2. UzSSA board members' term of office is one semester/year. Holding the position of President, Vice President, and Treasurer will require a one semester term of office prior to the election. Following election, duties are selected as determined by board members.
3. UzSSA board members are responsible for their designated duties, and their given authorities. The authority is given for the purpose of managing this official committee and public activities, and should never be used for personal reasons. The duties of UzSSA board members are to provide cultural experiences and opportunities to meet new interesting people for UzSSA members and people in the community.
